Renovation

We love doing renovations and additions. You'll agree that a design goal is often to make the new blend with the old. Sometimes, however, when an addition is proposed to an historic structure, the proper approach is to allow the addition to be of its time while respecting the old. Isn't that why you are here? It isn't always obvious.

Often a home or a building has good bones but does not meet the needs of the present owner or codes. We need to continue to do a better job of respecting the environment and using our natural resources wisely. Often recycling the building or parts of the structure is a logical decision from an emotional as well as a financial standpoint.

We have successfully given new life to underutilized commercial structures by adapting their use to meet present day market needs. For example, we converted a turn of the century brick Federal school gymnasium into live-work residences for artists. On a smaller scale, we have helped many families stay in their neighborhood by giving them just the right amount of additional space in their homes to make them comfortable.

Childhood Memories

Childhood Memories

Conesus Lake, New York
Chris had the opportunity to buy the house where she spent her summers as a child. In order to live there full-time, she needed to have space for guests and vehicles. She also needed to address a steep, sloped entrance to the existing cottage. The solution added a master bedroom suite on a newly created second floor tucked into a new roof. A cottage scaled garage is attached on the same level to allow at grade entry. By breaking up the size of the new additions and using appropriate windows and exterior trim details, the cottage scale is maintained. ^ Back to top.

New England Addition

A New England Addition

Weston, Connecticut
Eileen and David were ready to build a unique home when they contacted us. They were living in a two story colonial house they had built on speculation and were ready to sell after finding a converted barn on five acres of play space for their twin infant boys. The energetic couple added over 2,000 square feet with a kitchen, entry stair hall, sunspace, master bedroom and great room. The exterior was guided by traditional details, windows and proportions of the region. The openness and light filled rooms of the new timber framed addition bring new life to the timbered barn.

Hidden Meadow Farm

Honeoye Falls , NY

Meander down the winding gravel drive and you will come upon an extensive house renovation and addition christened Hidden Meadow Farm. There's a front porch to greet you, a fireplace in the country kitchen to cozy up to and endless views to admire as you sit on the deck and sip tea. These classic elements were the backbone of the design process used to craft the vision of the new owner for a country farmhouse south of Rochester.

Hudson Valley Gentleman’s Farm

Garrison, New York
Irv and Elizabeth added an upstairs master bedroom and formal living room to a Hudson Valley farmhouse. A double tiered porch looks out over the "north forty”. In the tradition of expanding farmhouses, the addition is linked by a new entry and stair hall. The cedar roof of the new structure offers a gentle curved sweep in recognition of the Hudson Valley Dutch architectural roots.

A Cliff Hugging Lake House Addition

Keuka Lake, New York

This Keuka Lake project squeezed a recreation room, a two car garage and a two boat stall building between the lake setback, the south side yard setback, a 16 foot deep shale cliff and a house. The spaces are stacked into three stories. A new built-in stair offers easier access from the house to the dock. The new addition respects the aesthetics of the existing architecture. ^ Back to top.

A Bungalow Revival

Pittsford, New York
An addition to this home located in beautiful historic Pittsford was necessary to accommodate the size of its new family. The home, built in 1914, has only had three previous owners to date. The goal was to provide a seamless addition. Reclaimed materials include doors and light and plumbing fixtures to name a few. The family is excited about preserving the history of those before them while creating new memories and a history of their own.
